PG Diploma /MSc Nutritional Therapy Course

Nutritional Therapy Council (NTC)NEWS: We are delighted to announce that our PG Diploma / MSc Nutritional Therapy course is now accredited by the Nutritional Therapy Council (NTC) (www.nutritionaltherapycouncil.org.uk). We are honoured to be the first Nutritional Therapy course in the UK to gain accreditation. Graduates from our course are now eligible to apply to the new Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) (www.cnhc.org.uk) for fast track registration as Nutritional Therapists.

This exciting Nutritional Therapy course provides comprehensive coverage of modern scientific nutritional knowledge, clinical skills and clinical research in the field of nutritional therapy. There is a strong emphasis on developing critical skills and familiarity with the evidence basis for nutritional therapy as well as on the development of highly effective and safe skills for clinical practice. The Nutritional Therapy course is unique in also incorporating analysis of comparative nutritional therapy approaches from traditional Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan, Ayurvedic and naturopathic medicine and their relevance to modern day practice. We also outline and compare the dietetic approach to different ailments and emphasise inter-professional working and debate.

The course is designed for health professionals already qualified and practising in an existing orthodox or complementary medicine discipline. Those already on the course, or who have enquired about the next course, include: doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dentists, acupuncturists, osteopaths, chiropractors and herbalists. The nutritional therapy course is open to anyone who has either a first degree or relevant work experience and who can demonstrate a knowledge of basic science and their ability to work at Master's level.

Typically our student practitioners are those with a strong interest in studying nutrition who would like to be able to apply nutritional principles expertly, safely and effectively in their therapeutic work, be able to answer their patients' and clients' nutritional queries appropriately and have a good working knowledge of current research. We also have students who have already undertaken some nutritional therapy training but are now seeking to upgrade their knowledge and clinical skills and learn how to conduct nutrition research.

Our aim is to provide both a solid academic grounding and extensive clinical skills training in nutritional therapy, in a stimulating and enjoyable learning environment, so that these skills can be applied confidently and expertly in clinical practice.

During the Nutritional Therapy course we run a series of "Master Classes and Seminars" with leading experts in their field, which are also open to all health care practitioners. In 2009 we had lectures and workshops from Antony Haynes on "Sports nutrition and Syndrome X", Professor Jane Plant CBE on "Beating and preventing cancer with diet and nutrition" (www.janeplant.com) and author and leading practitioner Maryon Stewart (www.askmaryonstewart.com) talking about "Overcoming symptoms of PMS and menopause with diet and nutrition." We aim to provide another exciting programme for the 2010/11 course.
