Acupuncture, Emotion and the Language of Healing and Health: Improving Clinical Outcomes with Medical NLP

Tutor(s): Garner Thomson
Date(s) and Times: Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd May 2010

"Words were originally magic, and to this day words have retained much of their ancient, magical power." - Sigmund Freud

We all know that communication is important in daily practice. But how many health professionals are aware that the words they use can actually physically and mentally weaken a patient or client – and even trigger adverse episodes, such as anxiety, pain or asthma attacks?

Did you know that it has been scientifically proved that your language can not only damage a patient but it can be harmful even if you intend the very opposite and neither you nor the listener is consciously aware of any potentially dangerous, hidden elements to your conversation?

On the other hand, focused, systematic communication – both verbal and non-verbal – can measurably develop optimism, hope and belief, all of which contribute to what psychologists call "positive expectancy", a significant aspect of both symptom relief and physical and emotional healing.

Hopeful and optimistic patients have been shown to experience a number of powerfully healing effects in addition to whatever treatment they receive. Some of these include: Optimistic patients have also been shown to experience shorter recovery times after surgery or trauma (including cardiovascular incidents), decreased frequency and severity of angina attacks and even extended survival in the event of cancer.

Unfortunately, patients who lose hope or display negative and depressive states are more vulnerable to infection, aggravation of existing or underlying illness, and slower or interrupted healing.

The nature of the relationship between a patient and the health professional is also a critical factor in healing and health. A health professional who the patient regards as indifferent or patronising is not only likely to have less successful outcomes, but faces a dramatically increased risk of litigation in the event of medical accident.

Conversely, a respectful, equal relationship between practitioner and patient is an important contributor to positive expectancy, greater concordance, adherence, and, therefore, improved clinical outcomes.

It follows, then, that both the relationship between practitioner and patient as well as the quality of the communication the practitioner uses should become as central to any consultation as the specific treatment used.

The development of a language of healing and health

Medical NLP developed out of the principles and techniques of mainstream Neuro-Linguistic Programming to meet these unique needs of health professionals of all specialties and their patients.

Since between a third and a half of all conditions for which patients seek help from medical practitioners have no identifiable organic cause, it is critical that health professionals in all fields share their energy, knowledge and experience in the pursuit of a genuine system of "whole-person" health care.

Medical NLP offers precisely such an integrative approach. It is the only current methodology that can be applied adjunctively and with precision as a "meta-approach" – that is, able to improve both the quality and the outcome of any system or treatment, allopathic or "complementary".

Why you should attend this workshop
This two-day workshop has been created especially to benefit members of the Northern College of Acupuncture. Participants will acquire many of the practical skills and attitudes presented on the Society’s unique Health Practitioner and Master Practitioner training courses, together with a number of explicit principles and techniques. Some of these are intended especially for the use of acupuncturists, and have not yet appeared in print or on any other training course.
